Sequin Gowns & Mermaid Crowns : July 2015

First let me start by apologizing for my absence.  As I'm sure many of you know, summer is a busy time and busy means less blogging!  But I've got a few awesome post ideas in the works so at least we have that to look forward to!

Anyway, I have been super addicted to Instagram lately.  Not that I wasn't before, but I've been particularly drawn to endlessly scrolling through my feed and also entering an excessive amount of loop giveaways (I've been feeling lucky lately!)  So in light of this, I decided to put together a little love for my Insta-favorites!  Basically, I grabbed a bunch of my favorite, recently liked posts and I'm gonna tell you why I love them!

I'm a sucker for a positive message and a killer palm print!

Can you say, hair goals?! Love this style and she is looking radiant!

It's been decided that I need everything in this photo.  Because I am indeed a tropical gangster.

Every mermaid needs a shell bag!! I'm obsessed with these.  So much that I even tracked down where to buy them! Neeeeeeddd.

Came across this profile when I was doing a loop giveaway (lol guilty) and they have the cutest kids clothes! Glad I'm documenting it here so when I have kids they will be dressed like this little one! Rock n' Roll!

That moment when you find yourself accidentally liking every picture on someone's IG.  Oops!  Sorry Show Me Your Mumu, I can't help it! I'm just a little obsessed with that pink and green two piece!

I think this one speaks for itself.  Preach.

Freaked out over "Nice Tail," freaking out even more over this Lilly Pulitzer 5x5! And anything mermaid related, honestly.

I am dreaming of this bathroom in my house one day!  Especially the mat!  Thank you, I do look gorgeous today! ;)

Macrame has always fascinated me, and seeing this action shot makes me want to learn how to do it myself!  I also really want a wall hanging for my room.

Love this print! It would look awesome in my room. Contemplating purchase.

This photo makes me both happy and sad.  Happy to see that people are caring enough to help clean up our coastlines!  Sad that this much debris is floating around out there.  Still a pretty cool pic!

Hey all!  So I've recently partaken in something that has been really great!  It's called Plastic Free July and it's a campaign run by the Save the Mermaids organization!  Basically, for the month of July, you make a pledge to be "Plastic free for the sea" by not using (or trying not to use) any single use plastic.  It's a pretty basic request, but harder to do than you'd think!

Awesome shirt: | Bandeau top: Aerie | Sunnies: Ray Ban Clubmasters
I know personally, being a part of this has made me a ton more aware of the amount of plastic I throw away each day.  I have been a lot more diligent of paying attention and being prepared for places I might be tempted by single use plastic. Most of what I'm guilty of is plastic bags at the supermarket (because I almost always forget to bring my reusable bags), plastic bottles of soda bought at the register, and Starbucks cups (because I never have my tumbler on me). I feel like I do better than a lot of people because I do care and I do try to refuse plastic, however my crap memory betrays me.   Regardless of the few plastic things I've taken the past couple of weeks, this is helping me be more aware and I have it on my mind more than I did before.  So in the long run this is definitely beneficial!!

So to keep a tidy list for myself and to give you guys something to reference, here is a list of ways to reduce your single use plastic consumption!

Reusable Bags

You'd be surprised where else you need these babies besides the supermarket.  Over the past few days I've been to Target and just general shopping, where I found I also needed my reusable bags.  It's definitely hard to do because a lot of times those things are unplanned and you kind of just go while you're already out and then by that point you realize your bags are hanging your house. So something I suggest would be keeping a few in your car.  Because you never know when you'll wind up at Target and most likely end up leaving with at least 4 bags of stuff.  Make sure they're not plastic!  As for shopping at the mall or things of that nature, try a small packable plastic bag.  They fit in your purse or there are even ones that you can just clip on the side.

Reusable Water Bottles

First off, I want to say that bottled water is horrible.  It's so unreliable and you never really know where it's coming from. And it's expensive!! So not only is it better for you to use your own refillable bottle, but it's better for the environment!  I'm sure you've seen pictures of single use plastic water bottles strung together on college campuses, in parks, and all over to give you an idea of just how much of them we dispose of.  It really is insane, and honestly not worth it.  So pick yourself up a cute water bottle (or 4), a water filter if you need it, and ditch the bottled water.
Reusable Plastic Baggies

Ziploc bags are a huge culprit of single use plastic mayhem.  I am super guilty of using these, because before I just never really thought about it.  I made my pb&j, stuck it in a baggie and was on my merry way.  But recently I came across something I didn't even know existed: reusable plastic baggies.  I actually found them at TJMaxx in the home goods section and was like, "Hey this is pretty cool!"  The only thing is make sure you thoroughly clean them each time by hand.  The dishwasher just doesn't cut it because it can't get in the corners and get all of that sticky peanut butter out.  I find they are best for snacks like crackers and things that aren't so sticky.  I also used mine to collect sea shells on the beach! They are definitely handy to have around and even if you still find you need to use regular Ziploc bags, these will reduce your use by a decent amount.

Drink Tumblers

How many times to you go to Starbucks a week? Or any other coffee shop of fast food place for that matter.  Think amount how many plastic cups and straws you throw away every day.  It's a lot.  And you don't even realize it until you stop and think about it; until you are made aware.  A lot like our plastic bag friends, a lot of these plastic cup incidents take place on the fly which makes it hard to be prepared.  But what you can do is keep a tumbler or reusable coffee cup in your car so if you do swing by Starbucks on your way to work you can have them put it in your own special cup that doesn't kill the environment.  Yay!

Now there are a lot of things that are especially hard to avoid.  For example, just this morning I had to throw away an empty orange juice container with a frown on my face.  Although, my dad uses them sometimes for drink mixes, we don't have room in the fridge so away it went.  I think the least we can do at this point is recycle, and if you don't have that ability do as much as you can to reduce & reuse! I know if I wind up bringing home a bunch of plastic bags, I use them in my bathroom and office trash cans.  So even though I'm technically throwing them out, I still get more than one use out of them! If anything, it will make you feel better.

So, I plan on making Plastic Free July a great learning experience and a big challenge for me.  If not only to reduce my single plastic use, but to do my research and learn about other ways I can help!  There are plenty of great resources online (just do a Google search and you'll find a ton!) and also check out the Save the Mermaids website!  There's a ton of great info on there, as well as awesome products!  And don't forget to go and sign their Plastic Free July Pledge!! Be plastic free for the sea!!

Patriotic Pinup with CoverGirl!

Happy Independence Weekend Y'all!! I'm going to be having so much fun being super patriotic this weekend (photos to come on social media) and I've been truly over excited about planning my outfits and makeup!  So I decided to show off my new CoverGirl goodies and give you all a super cute, Patriotic Pinup style makeup to rock on the 4th!

First off, let me talk about this makeup.  I had a mini freak out when CoverGirl contacted me to be a part of their blogger program and to test out these two awesome new products.  #fangirling.  Anyway, there was so many ideas I could use these products for, but I eventually settled on what is one of my go to looks (but amped up of course!).

CoverGirl the Super Sizer Mascara

This mascara has a lot to offer.  Now I have tried a lot, and I mean a LOT of different mascaras and this one did pretty well for itself.  I didn't find it to be as great as some of my premier brand mascaras, understandably, however within my drugstore collection it made pretty high marks!  The brush was my favorite part.  The way it forms almost an inverted triangle really gives you a variety when it comes to uses.  For example the smaller end is great for the baby bottom lashes and the thicker part at the top is perfect for getting those super volumized top lashes! Now I do want to share with you a handy trick that I didn't realize until I did a little research.  I didn't love this at first because I found that it was hard to layer without clumping.  I personally don't use more than 2 or so layers of mascara because I was blessed with naturally big lashes.  However, I was still getting annoyed with it when it was clumping after the first layer.  And then I found out that the trick is to twirl the want while applying! Such a simple fix, yet I'd never thought of it!  Once I implemented this technique, the clumping went buh bye and my lashes looked fab!  I give this 4 stars!

CoverGirl Intensify Me! Liquid Eyeliner

I am a die hard liquid liner gal.  I have tried many, much of which I've hated.  But this is my new favorite by far.  What I love about this is that you get the best of all worlds of eyeliner.  You get the slickness of the liquid formula with the steadiness of a marker, the thinness of a brush, and the variety of a gel tip!  The tip of this liner is flat with thin rounded edges giving you the option of a thin or super thick line.  It's super easy to use and I didn't find myself struggling to make my wings even (which is a feat in itself.) I was able to make almost perfectly straight lines and the formula didn't rub off when I went over it a second time.  I really love this liner and I would recommend it for anyone who wants to get their toes wet in the liquid liner realms.  5 stars!!

The Before & After

Am I the only one who looks insanely bored in all of my before pictures? I don't know man.  Maybe if I wasn't smiling all the time I'd have some pretty hot RBF. Lol.  But I digress.  The before picture is me in the foundation only buff.  Since I have been sick the past few days, ain't NO ONE want to see me without any makeup.  Believe me.  But onto the look.

I was going for a vintage pinup style with a little pizzazz.  So I started with a base of flawless looking skin, a little bit of bronzer, and some classic pink blush. I also did a little extra shaping of my eyebrows.

For the eyes, I used a nude color on my lid with a cool brown in my crease.  I also used a bright white, sparkly shadow at my brow bone and in the inner corners of my eyes.  For liner, I used a nude colored liner in my waterline and brought it into the inner corner of my eye as well as the inner half of my under eye. Then I used my CoverGirl Intensify Me! Liquid Liner to get the perfect cat eye!  Last I used the CoverGirl the Super Sizer Mascara on my top and bottom lashes for big, beautiful lashes!

I topped it all off with a classic red lip with a little shimmer!  And voila! A sparkly, classic pinup look, perfect to pair with your red, white and blue ensemble! *Wink Wink*

Bonus!  If you like to get a little crazy when donning your patriotic garb, I added a little something extra to the eyes just for you! For a little extra oomph, grab a blue and red eyeshadow and go to town!  I just added blue under my eyes to about the half way point and then put the red winged out on the ends of my cat eye liner!  Surprisingly, it's really cute and not super obnoxious.  Just a little nod to the USA!!

So that, my friends, is my Patriotic Pinup look for you, brought to you by me and CoverGirl!!  Below I will list all the products I used if you want to exactly replicate this look or were just a bit curious!  Keep an eye on social media for my crazy weekend happenings, and be sure to share your 4th of July looks!  I'd love to see them!
